So what does it take to earn a sports scholarship in the American College/University sports system?

This is something we get asked a lot and there isn’t one simple answer, but there are several factors that will affect your chances.

Your playing ability will, of course, affect your chances. If you are a former scholar at a category registered academy or have played at one of your sports highest levels the chances are your playing ability will be at a sufficient level to earn a large scholarship offer. If however, you haven’t played at your sports highest level there is still every chance you can earn a scholarship if you put in the work and the effort.

Your educational background will also have an effect on the size of the offer you may be eligible to receive. Those who have 5 A-C GCSE’s or theIrish,Welsh, Scottish equivalent and have continued into higher education to study A-levels, B-Tecs or the equivalents will stand better chances of being offered larger scholarships. This is due to you being able to attend all types of universities (NCAA,NAIA & NJCAA) as well as giving you the chance to secure academic scholarship money on top of your sports scholarship money.

Lastly, your attitude is absolutely key in whether you receive an attractive offer. Just as in any other high-level sports set up, coaches and staff expect a certain attitude from their players and athletes. You will need to have a hard working can do mindset. There will be times when you feel like quitting but it is here that you either make it or break it. If coaches are able to see the right sort of attitude from you, it will increase their belief in you and in turn the amount of scholarship they are likely to offer you.
